The Next Step?...

The project brief we received stipulated the hotels interest in carrying out a feasibility analysis on rain water harvesting and wind turbine installation. The initial meeting with our industrial links at the Jury's Inn hotel, resulted in the scope of our project becoming even broader than this. We discovered the hotel had had a energy saving survey carried out by the Carbon Trust. Many energy saving methods were proposed as a result and the hotel proceded to instigate all of these changes.

Knowing all of these facts, and having been supplied with a mass of energy and resource consumption data, we began planning the next step the hotel could take in order to improve its performance,

From our literature review our project crits and advice from our supervisor we came up with the following strategy:

  • Develop a Microsoft Excel based tool for hotels to carry out the following:
    • Analysis of past and present energy and resource consumption;
    • Provide normalised benchmarking results;
    • Analyse performance using Regression and CUSUM techniques;
    • Predict future consumption using these techniques;
    • Provide feasibility and cost-benefit analysis for intallation of renewable technologies (rain water harvesting and wind turbines);

Most importantly the final analysis tool we create must be original. This will be achieved by combining a number of different performance analysis methods, specifically designed by us for hotels to use, and it will be simple to use.
